If you are here because you are needing a professional garage door cable repair, then you are in the right place. Bay Area Overhead Door Co. is your team of experts when it comes to everything relating to your garage door. We are happy to help you out and get your garage door cables replaced.

What is a Garage Door Cable?

Most often, garage door cable refers to the galvanized cable that is attached, one at each end, from the bottom corner up to a drum that they are wound around. These cables are used in conjunction with your torsion springs and are a vital part of keeping your garage door safe. If your spring breaks, these cables will prevent the high tension springs from becoming a projectile hazard.

Garage Door Cable Repair

These cables will need to be rewound on the drum after we replace your torsion springs. Generally, there is no damage to the cable when the spring breaks but we will inspect them first just to make sure. There are a few other times when your cables will need to be replaced:

  • If they are rusty from moisture at the base of your door
  • If they have broken or if there is wear on them. This can happen if your door is not balanced, it can cause rubbing on the cables
  • A cable that is starting to fray
  • Old cables can break simply from their age

How to Take Care of Your Cables

It is important to properly inspect and maintain your cables to ensure your garage door is safe. Once or twice a year, inspect your cables and look for fraying or rust. You can also inspect the pulleys they are attached to and make sure they are not rusty.

Another important thing to remember is to use a non-tacky water-based lubrication on your cables. Grease causes dirt and debris to stick to them, which will impact them working correctly through the pulleys and drums. Go along the full length of the cable, looking for kinks or anything sticking out in the way of the cable.

What to Do If You Need Garage Door Cable Repair

If you have a broken cable, it is important that you call us right away. We even offer emergency service if it is outside of our normal business hours. Do not attempt to do anything with your door because of safety concerns as well as causing further damage to your door.

If your door is stuck open because of a broken cable, leaving your home not secure, give us a call and we can advise you on what to do.
